What a thoughtful, honest post. I always wonder why the word 'brave' always get used when someone is grieving? Is it because it describes that 'chin up' thing we're all so good at - really, it's how other people perceive you coping, when deep down it's the last thing you feel.

My heart really does go out to you. As well as asking all the questions I would be asking, you seem to have anticipated how you might feel and you're trying to make sense of that too. Don't beat yourself up the shoulda woulda couldas tho', remember he probably saw it all very differently and enjoyed having a better relationship with you over the past couple of years.

Sorry for all the analysing! Lots of love and hugs, Who X

1) yup, no need to mention the fact we were in touristy areas on a saturday. we were well aware of that fact. and we were well aware that we were tubing, not bussing. we were trying to get away from the busy areas, but we were also trying to get to areas we knew as fast as possible - my experience of busses in london are that they are slow, and you need to know your area well to use them effectively.

2)yes they might have an oyster card, but they could use our day pass that day and save the money on their oyster card for another time.

3) because we were looking for somewhere to eat and all the pubs there were full to the brim with queens, hotpants and pink feather boas.

4) nope! although i guess the time i spent in camden i usually had my head down in gothic faux misery... ;)

6) i felt like punching randoms by the end of the day but i didn't. because i am a human being, not some emotionally erroded fuckhead.

7) no, i mentioned that. i mentioned how they make me feel like a bumpkin for not having anywhere that sells sushi at 4am. who the feck wants sushi at 4am anyway! besides, in bath and oxford (my cities) we don't NEED buses or the tube. we walk. for free. using our legs.

1) If you were in Covent Garden, Camden, Leicester Square and Soho or on the Tube on a Saturday, none of the people bumping into you were Londoners. Only tourists go into town or to Camden on a weekend daytime (and to Leicester Square, ever). And Londoners take the bus, the Tube is for people who don't know their way around.

2) People don't want your day pass because they already have an Oyster Card.

3) Pride is an AWESOME time to be in Soho, why didn't you just go with the flow and hang out with the queens?

4) There is a long tradition of weird-looking people getting money off silly tourists to have their photo taken on the bridge in Camden. Don't you remember the punks with big mohicans in the 90s?

5) Yeah, it's horrible when you get stuck in a crowd on a hot Tube. See above re: taking the bus.

6) You know how annoying it is in Bath when you can't get to the hairdresser's on time because of 115,000,000 foreign exchange kids getting in the way? That's what it's like in London All. The. Time. So that's why Londoners get their kicks by elbowing people in crowds.

7) Having said all that, your post pretty much sums up why I moved out of London. Only you left out: the fucking superior attitude of Londoners who think that not being able to get (to use your example) sushi delivered at 10.45pm (for the price of a house in the South of France) means anywhere outside the M25 is some kind of cultural desert where everyone marries their siblings. You know what? I have a freezer, I keep food in it for when I get hungry in the night. Yay for the provinces!

how incredibly sad that no one apologises or says sorry because they don't have time to, or because no one else does. how shameful. how bleak.

yes, i know we went to the wrong/busiest places - a frustration of mine is that i don't know london well enough to escape when/if i need to. but tbh, i really don't want to bother trying to get to know it now!

I think for most Londoners it's not that they are rude as such. It's more like, to live in this city you have to grow an incredibly thick skin. Moving from Bath to London, I too bumped into people *all* the time in the busy streets and the busy tubes and spent more time apologising to people than I did actually getting anywhere. Eventually I gave up as it was too time-consuming and you just realise that London is busy and you are going to bump people. Saying that, I always hold doors open to people, thank bus drivers where I can and consider myself to be polite and courteous in all other circumstances.
HOWEVER, when people (manly big manly chavvy men) shout at me because I got pushed from behind and bumped into their fat girlfriend I find myself getting indignant and shout back. I don't see why I should apologise because during the lemming shuffle that is certain areas of London I got shoved and fell into someone else.
Basically living in London you learn what areas not to frequent and when definitely not to go to them! And you listed all them :)

exactly the point tupper made. i grimaced at the thought but only because of this preconceived notion. i suppose in that respect the idea is a bit ridiculous, but it still doesn't negate the fact that make-up is the convention and does make most people look better. except men. they look silly.

i like make-up because i like the creativity of it. i like experimenting with colours and textures. i also find the ritual of the putting on of make-up incredibly therapeutic.

you get used to the 'mask' feeling. it's nice to not have any on if you want to rub your eyes or whatever, but I don't notice how it feels on me anymore. except for when i poke myself in the eye with the mascara wand of course.

most women don't need foundation though - maybe that's what makes you feel mask-ey? i only wear it because of my scar.

In which case, is the same true for men? If we didn't have pre-conceived notions of make-up being a feminine thing, would men's faces look better if they were a bit polished up too?!

One thing that did strike a chord in the feature was her comment about make up feeling like a mask - I feel the same way if I have any on. Feels horrible and unnatural and cloggy (though it's just a normal amount, not on thickly).

Tupper made an interesting point - if make-up never existed, would I look in the mirror with the same look of horror? Probably not. But it does exist.

And I honestly think that most women (most) look MUCH better with a bit of spit and polish. All women look awful with too much, of course. But the majority could do with a hint of mascara here, a touch of blusher there.
